Dallas's White Rock Lake ranks #8 in new Texas haunted index
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, White Rock Lake in Dallas ranks #8 in HauntBound's 2026 index of Texas's most haunted places. The index ranks 424 Texas sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
White Rock Lake ranks #8. Dallas built the 1,015-acre reservoir in 1911 to address a water shortage, and the Civilian Conservation Corps developed the surrounding parkland beginning in the early 1930s. Two separate published accounts describe activity there, retold in five later publications.
The lake's best-known account is the Lady of the Lake, a vanishing-hitchhiker legend published since at least 1943, in which motorists along East Lawther Drive pick up a young woman in a wet evening dress who asks to be driven home and disappears from the car before they arrive, leaving the seat soaked. The connection to any specific drowning remains unconfirmed. Visitors also report shadow figures near the boathouse and unexplained lights over the water at night.
Statewide, the Driskill in Austin ranks #1, and the Alamo, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #4.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:White Rock Lake, 8300 E Lawther Dr., Dallas, is a free public park with a 9.3-mile paved trail loop open daily.
