Jonesborough's Christopher Taylor House is Tennessee's oldest documented haunted site

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Jonesborough's Christopher Taylor House is the oldest documented site in HauntBound's 2026 index of Tennessee's most haunted places. The index ranks 145 Tennessee sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Revolutionary War Major Christopher Taylor built the log cabin between 1777 and 1778, before Jonesborough was founded in 1779 or Tennessee became a state in 1796, making it the town's oldest surviving structure. Andrew Jackson used it as a law office in the late 1780s, while he served as public prosecutor for the district that would become Tennessee, before his career pulled him on to Nashville.

Local tradition holds that Jackson's ghost still walks between the cabin and the neighboring Chester Inn, where he also practiced law, and some visitors report a figure appearing in the cabin's closed doorway before it fades into the yard.

Statewide, the Siam Steel Bridge Site in Elizabethton ranks #1, and Bell Witch Cave in Adams, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Christopher Taylor House, 105 College St., Jonesborough, is a log cabin that can be viewed from the yard at no charge.
