Memphis's Orpheum Theatre ranks among Tennessee's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Memphis's Orpheum Theatre ranks among Tennessee's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 145 Tennessee sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
The Orpheum Theatre ranks #6. Rebuilt after a 1923 fire that followed a performance by singer Blossom Seeley, the vaudeville house reopened at Main and Beale streets on November 19, 1928, and today seats 2,308. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. Guests describe footsteps, doors opening on their own, and a weeping presence in the upper balcony; the theater's president described a vanishing dollhouse prop in a 2021 profile from Action News 5.
Statewide, the Siam Steel Bridge Site in Elizabethton ranks #1, and Bell Witch Cave in Adams, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:Orpheum Theatre, 203 S. Main St., Memphis, offers guided historical tours and hosts touring shows, concerts and ballet; box office hours vary by performance.
