Elizabethton's Siam Steel Bridge Site ranks as Tennessee's most haunted place

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, the Siam Steel Bridge Site near Elizabethton ranks #1 among Tennessee's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 145 Tennessee sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

The Siam Steel Bridge Site ranks #1. The steel-girder bridge carried traffic over the Watauga River from 1941 until it was demolished as structurally deficient in 2010 and replaced by a concrete span. Three separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1977, when Gate City, Virginia sheriff's deputy Beecher Davis reported that his car's passenger door flew open and shut on its own as he crossed the bridge, leaving an indentation in the seat as if someone were sitting there. A widely told legend also attaches a young couple's deaths to the bridge, but researcher Justin H. Guess found the story's dates predate the bridge's 1941 construction and no matching record in Carter County archives.

Bell Witch Cave in Adams, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:The Siam Steel Bridge Site, off Hwy 91 in the Siam Valley near Elizabethton, is visible from the roadside; the steel structure described in the legend no longer stands.
