Sioux Falls holds two of South Dakota's documented haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Sioux Falls holds two of South Dakota's documented haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 25 South Dakota sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

The Orpheum Theatre ranks #10. The Solari brothers built the vaudeville house at 315 North Phillips Avenue, and it opened October 2, 1913; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 as the city's oldest surviving theater. One firsthand published account, retold in three later publications, describes activity there, the earliest dated to 1959. Staff and performers have nicknamed a reported presence in the balcony Larry; one account describes a growing blue light there and the building's fusing blowing out overnight, and the figure's identity has no settled answer.

Statewide, Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City ranks #1, and Historic Bullock Hotel in Deadwood, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #2.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
