Abbeville Opera House ranks #1 in South Carolina's new haunted index

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Abbeville Opera House ranks #1 among South Carolina's most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 104 South Carolina sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Abbeville Opera House ranks #1. The theater opened in 1908 on the upper floors of a combined Opera House and City Hall building on Court Square, and it hosted touring vaudeville acts, silent films and political rallies as a stop on the regional circuit. Five separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1915.

The theater keeps one balcony seat permanently reserved for a woman in early-20th-century dress, a touring actress local lore says fell ill and died before she could perform. A second reported figure is an African American workman said to have died in a fall during the theater's 1908 construction; staff describe him backstage and in the upper service corridors. Staff and patrons also describe phantom footsteps in the rafters above the stage and the click of heeled shoes in empty hallways after performances end. South Carolina ETV's Ghosts and Legends segment documented the staff tradition of the reserved seat.

Statewide, apparitions are the most commonly reported phenomenon, on record at 60 sites.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
