FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Providence County holds four of Rhode Island's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, four Providence County places rank among Rhode Island's ten most haunted in HauntBound's 2026 index, including the Conjuring House (exterior viewing only) at #2. The index ranks 53 Rhode Island sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
The Conjuring House ranks #2. Roger and Carolyn Perron bought the 1736 farmhouse in 1970 and lived there with their five daughters through 1980; their experiences became the basis for the 2013 film The Conjuring. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. The family described a woman in 19th-century dress and beds shaking, attributed to a resident identified as Bathsheba Sherman.
Governor Sprague Mansion ranks #3. William Sprague built the Cranston mansion in 1790; it was home to two Rhode Island governors. Two separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1925. Staff and visitors describe a butler called Charlie on the staircase, and in a bedroom of dolls, a sense that their eyes follow visitors.
Also in the top ten: the Graduate Providence (#5) and Providence City Hall (#9).
Statewide, the Astors' Beechwood Mansion (exterior viewing only) ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
