Historic Rock Ford in Lancaster ranks #4 among Pennsylvania's most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Historic Rock Ford in Lancaster ranks #4 among Pennsylvania's most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 245 Pennsylvania sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Historic Rock Ford ranks #4. Revolutionary War General Edward Hand, adjutant general to George Washington, completed the Georgian brick mansion in 1794, and it is now a house museum run by the Rock Ford Foundation. Six separate published accounts describe activity there. During a Yuletide candlelight tour, visitors described a man seated silently in a darkened corner; staff confirmed no one had been seated there, and the visitors later identified him from a portrait as General Hand. The foundation now offers its own after-dark program exploring the mansion's reported history.
Statewide, Baker Mansion in Altoona ranks #1, and Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Rd., Lancaster, offers guided mansion tours Tuesday through Sunday during its tour season, which runs April through October.
