Gettysburg has 11 documented haunted places, new index finds
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Gettysburg counts 11 documented haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index of Pennsylvania's most haunted places, including one that ranks in the state's top ten. The index ranks 245 Pennsylvania sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Gettysburg National Military Park ranks #6. The July 1-3, 1863 battle between Robert E. Lee's Confederate army and George Meade's Union forces produced roughly 51,000 casualties and marked the war's turning point. Seven separate published accounts describe activity there. Visitors to Devil's Den describe figures in period dress among the boulders and camera malfunctions, and two Pennsylvania Hall administrators once described stepping off an elevator into what they took for an operating Civil War surgical ward. The National Park Service does not endorse the reports and bars commercial ghost tours from park land.
Statewide, Baker Mansion in Altoona ranks #1, and Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:Gettysburg National Military Park, 1195 Baltimore Pike, is open daily, dawn to dusk; the battlefield grounds and auto tour are free, and the museum and cyclorama require a paid ticket.
