Cambria County Jail in Ebensburg ranks #5 among Pennsylvania's most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Cambria County Jail in Ebensburg ranks #5 among Pennsylvania's most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 245 Pennsylvania sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Cambria County Jail ranks #5. Contractor William Callan built the Gothic Revival jail in Ebensburg in 1872 from architect Edward Haviland's plans; the county closed it in 1997, and new owner David Davis reopened it for historic and paranormal tours in 2024. Four separate published accounts describe activity there. Visitors and investigation teams report disembodied voices and cold spots near the former gallows, and one visiting group described a member touched by icy hands and a figure glimpsed on the catwalk before it vanished.

Statewide, Baker Mansion in Altoona ranks #1, and Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Cambria County Jail, 201 North Center St., Ebensburg, is open for historic tours Sundays, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., general admission $20 for adults, with paranormal investigations offered in October and through the fall season.
