Constantine Theater in Pawhuska ranks #1 in Oklahoma's haunted index

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, the Constantine Theater in Pawhuska ranks #1 among Oklahoma's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 78 Oklahoma sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Constantine Theater ranks #1, and no Oklahoma site has more separate published accounts. C.C. Constantine remodeled the building, which had opened in the 1880s as the Pawhuska House hotel, into a Greek Revival opera house that held its official grand opening on December 22, 1914, with a touring production of the Broadway musical The Prince of Pilsen. Six separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1980.

Local tradition holds the theater is haunted by Sappho Constantine, the daughter of the theater's namesake owner, first reported by restoration workers in the 1980s. Staff, volunteers and visiting investigators have since described a felt presence, unexplained sighs picked up on a switched-off microphone, and the same door sound repeating three times. A visiting paranormal investigator cautioned that unexplained is not the same as paranormal.

Statewide, the Skirvin Hilton Hotel in Oklahoma City, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #6.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
