FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Guilford County holds two of North Carolina's ten most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, two Guilford County places, the old U.S. Highway 70 Underpass in Jamestown and Greensboro's Carolina Theatre, rank among North Carolina's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 161 North Carolina sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

The U.S. Highway 70 Underpass on East Main Street, home of the Lydia's Bridge legend, ranks #8. One firsthand published account, retold in two later publications, describes activity there. Drivers describe a young woman in a white evening gown, known as Lydia, who asks for a ride to High Point and vanishes before the car arrives. Local researchers have linked the legend to Annie L. Jackson, a Greensboro woman killed in a June 1920 automobile accident on the High Point Road, and a Pomeroy Foundation Legends and Lore marker went up at the site in 2023.

The Carolina Theatre on South Greene Street ranks #10. It opened on Halloween night 1927 as a vaudeville and silent-movie palace, and in 1963 students from North Carolina A&T and Bennett College, refused admission, blocked its doors in protest of its segregated balcony. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. Staff describe a woman crossing the mezzanine and vanishing into a wall.

Statewide, the Grove Park Inn in Asheville ranks #1, and the Biltmore Estate, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
