Charlotte counts 11 documented haunted places in new North Carolina index
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Charlotte holds 11 of North Carolina's 161 documented haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index, though none of them ranks among the state's top ten. The index ranks 161 North Carolina sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Rí Rá Irish Pub occupies a building dating to roughly 1900, the second-oldest in Uptown Charlotte, once a bank and textile factory. Staff describe beer taps turning on by themselves and sewing-machine sounds from the basement. A brick wall behind the hostess desk bears the letters 'ABC' in chalk staff say they cannot scrub away.
Duke Mansion (White Oaks), a 1915 Colonial Revival home in Myers Park, was bought by industrialist James Buchanan Duke in 1919. Ghost-tour operators describe a figure in dark, formal clothing on the terrace.
Also documented in Charlotte: Elmwood / Pinewood Cemetery, an 1853 burial ground desegregated in 1969; and the McNinch House Restaurant, an 1892 home that hosted President Taft in 1909. Firefighter Pruett Black died in a 1934 fall at Old Fire Station No. 4. Subsequent occupants describe a hallway figure identified as Black.
Statewide, the Grove Park Inn ranks #1, and the Biltmore Estate is the state's most famous haunted site but misses the top ten.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
