Three Saratoga Springs landmarks rank among New York's ten most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, three Saratoga Springs landmarks rank among New York's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 343 New York sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Yaddo ranks #3, and no New York site has more separate published accounts. Spencer Trask and Katrina Trask bought the Union Avenue estate in 1881; after the first house burned in 1891 they built the 55-room mansion, which welcomed its first resident artists in 1926. Five separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1984. Resident artists describe a woman in white on the staircase, identified by many as Katrina Trask; a composer and a novelist among past residents have described sightings.

The Canfield Casino in Congress Park ranks #5. John Morrissey built it in 1870 as a gambling club, and it has housed the Saratoga Springs History Museum since shortly after the city bought it in 1911. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. Staff and visitors describe a woman in white associated with Reubena Hyde Walworth, a nurse who died of typhoid in 1898 while caring for soldiers.

Also in the top ten: the Arcade Building on Broadway (#10).

Statewide, the Amityville Horror House (exterior viewing only), now a private home and the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
