Landmark Theatre in Syracuse ranks #7 in New York

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Landmark Theatre in Syracuse ranks #7 in HauntBound's 2026 index of New York's most haunted places. The index ranks 343 New York sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Landmark Theatre ranks #7. Architect Thomas W. Lamb designed the 2,908-seat Indo-Persian fantasy movie palace, which opened as Loew's State Theatre in February 1928; a grassroots preservation campaign saved it from demolition in 1977, and it reopened as the Landmark Theatre. Two separate published accounts describe activity there. Staff and patrons describe a pale figure in a white dress, known at the theater as Clarissa, who is said to have died in a fall from the balcony not long after the theater opened; she is most often accompanied by the scent of lilac perfume and reported especially when someone breaks the house rule against smoking inside. The CNY Ghost Hunters have investigated the theater on multiple occasions, and published accounts describe apparitions, disembodied voices and unexplained blue lights, particularly in the auditorium and lower levels.

Statewide, Merchant's House Museum in New York ranks #1; the Amityville Horror House (exterior viewing only), now a private home and the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Landmark Theatre, 362 South Salina Street, Syracuse, is open for ticketed performances and occasional history tours; check the theater's site for the schedule.
