Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas ranks #2 among New Mexico's haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, New Mexico, ranks #2 among the state's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 56 New Mexico sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Plaza Hotel, promoted as "the Belle of the Southwest" when it opened facing the Old Town Plaza in 1882, ranks #2. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. Guests and staff report the smell of cigar smoke and drawers opening and closing on their own in Room 310, associated with former owner and Las Vegas mayor Byron T. Mills, who died in 1947. A local paranormal investigator, Cody Polston, has questioned whether Mills's own rooms in the hotel were actually Room 310.
Statewide, the St. James Hotel in Cimarron ranks #1 and is also New Mexico's most famous haunted site.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
