Jersey City has two documented haunted places, new index finds
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Jersey City has two documented haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index of New Jersey's most haunted places, though neither ranks among the state's top ten. The index ranks 162 New Jersey sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
At 629 Grove Street, an eight-story freight warehouse built in 1929-30 for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, employees working second and third shifts describe apparitions in period clothing resembling early-20th-century railroad workers, along with running footsteps and disembodied screams; no specific workplace accident has been documented at the building.
Also documented in Jersey City: Old Bergen Church Cemetery, the city's oldest European burial ground, established by Dutch settlers around 1660, where a 2021 restoration used ground-penetrating radar to confirm more than 1,200 burials.
Statewide, The Southern Mansion in Cape May ranks #1, and Leeds Point (Jersey Devil Birthplace) in Galloway, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #2.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
