Durham's Three Chimneys Inn is New Hampshire's most haunted place
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Durham's Three Chimneys Inn ranks #1 in HauntBound's 2026 index of New Hampshire's most haunted places. The index ranks 40 New Hampshire sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Three Chimneys Inn ranks #1. Valentine Hill, a Boston-based merchant, built the original homestead in 1649, and his son Nathaniel later expanded it into the three-story colonial that gives the inn its name. Four separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1909. Local tradition holds that Hill's daughter Hannah, married in 1659, later drowned in the Oyster River behind the inn, and staff attribute the building's activity to her: drawers pulled open by exactly one inch, deadbolts locking themselves, and a former chef's report of seeing a woman in vintage clothing behind the tavern bar after closing. New equipment brought into the inn has also failed in ways vendors could not explain.
Statewide, the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire's most famous haunted site, ranks #3.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
