FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Hillsborough County holds three of New Hampshire's ten most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, three Hillsborough County places rank among New Hampshire's ten most haunted in HauntBound's 2026 index, including Wilton's Vale End Cemetery at #2. The index ranks 40 New Hampshire sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Vale End Cemetery ranks #2. The burying ground holds the grave of Mary Ritter Spaulding, first wife of Captain Isaac Spaulding, who died at 35 and shares a single headstone with his second wife, also named Mary. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. Witnesses describe a column of blue light, roughly the size of a person, rising above her grave on hazy spring and fall evenings before sinking back down. Wilton's historical society traces the 'Blue Lady' legend only to the 1970s, and a longtime resident who grew up nearby in the 1940s and 1950s said she never heard the story as a child.

Also in the top ten: Pine Hill Cemetery, known regionally as Blood Cemetery, in Hollis (#4) and Gilson Road Cemetery in Nashua (#7).

Statewide, Three Chimneys Inn in Durham ranks #1, and the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #3.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
