FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Bretton Woods' Omni Mount Washington Resort has New Hampshire's most documented haunting
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, the Omni Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods ranks #3 in HauntBound's 2026 index of New Hampshire's most haunted places. The index ranks 40 New Hampshire sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Omni Mount Washington Resort ranks #3, and its six separate published accounts are the most of any New Hampshire site. Joseph Stickney, a coal and railroad magnate, opened the Spanish Renaissance grand hotel in 1902, and his widow, Carolyn, later a princess by marriage, summered in Room 314 until her death in 1936. Guests describe a woman in period dress seated at the foot of the bed or brushing her hair at the vanity, and staff report lights that switch on and off unprompted. Syfy's Ghost Hunters investigated the room in 2008, and staff treat the reports lightly, pointing out Room 314 on the historic tour.
Statewide, Three Chimneys Inn in Durham ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
