Fremont's Barnard Park is Nebraska's oldest documented haunted site
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Fremont's Barnard Park is Nebraska's oldest documented haunted site in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 32 Nebraska sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Barnard Park sits on a Fremont city block where Brigham Young and the vanguard company of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints camped on April 16, 1847, organizing the westward journey's military structure. The block later served as Fremont's first municipal cemetery; when the city relocated the burials to Ridge Cemetery in the 1880s, records indicate not every grave was moved, and the site became a public park.
Visitors describe figures crossing the lawn after dark, most often a woman said to be a Mormon Trail traveler who walks the park's perimeter on winter nights, and a man occasionally seen on a bench, attributed to one of the original cemetery burials left in place.
Statewide, Museum of Shadows in Omaha ranks #1, and Fort Robinson, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:Barnard Park, on Military Ave. between Irving and Clarkson Streets, Fremont, is a free public city park.
