FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Crawford's Fort Robinson misses Nebraska's haunted top ten

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Fort Robinson in Crawford, Nebraska's most famous haunted site, does not rank among the state's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 32 Nebraska sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Fort Robinson began in 1874 as a military post on the White River near the Red Cloud Agency in northwest Nebraska. The Lakota leader Crazy Horse was fatally wounded there in September 1877, and in January 1879 Northern Cheyenne under Morning Star, also known as Dull Knife, broke out of confinement at the post; in the pursuit that followed, many of the Cheyenne, including women and children, were killed. The fort interprets these events today with care for the people who died there, and it became a Nebraska state park in 1956.

Visitors and staff describe hoofbeats with no horses in sight and figures in period dress near the old quarters and parade ground, folklore the fort's own record keeps separate from its documented history; Fort Robinson does not attach paranormal claims to Crazy Horse or to the Cheyenne who died in the outbreak.

Statewide, Museum of Shadows in Omaha ranks #1.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Fort Robinson, 3200 US Highway 20, Crawford, is a state park with a self-guided historic post and museum tour, plus lodging in the restored officers' quarters.
