FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Crofton is home to Nebraska's #2 haunted place
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Crofton is home to Nebraska's #2 haunted place in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 32 Nebraska sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
The Historic Argo Hotel ranks #2. Crofton businessman Nick Michaelis built the brick hotel in 1912 to serve passengers on the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad, and the building operated as a sanitarium from the 1930s through the 1950s before its 1994 restoration. Four separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1940. Guests and owners describe cigar smoke and the sound of laughter and music from empty hallways; bartenders in the hotel's restaurant separately describe an older man seated in a booth who vanishes when approached, and after repeated reports of a guest-room bathroom door swinging open on its own, owners replaced it with a curtain.
Statewide, Museum of Shadows in Omaha ranks #1, and Fort Robinson, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
