Fort Peck Theatre ranks #8 among Montana's most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Fort Peck Theatre in Fort Peck ranks #8 among Montana's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 61 Montana sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Fort Peck Theatre ranks #8, and it's the index's most family-friendly pick in the state. The Army Corps of Engineers built the 1,209-seat theater in 1934 for the roughly 50,000 workers building Fort Peck Dam, and it opened that November with a screening of "The Richest Girl in the World." One firsthand published account describes activity there.

Staff and volunteers tell two different stories about who haunts the theater: a 2018 Glasgow Courier feature named the presence "Floyd," while national haunted-places roundups call him "Red," a supposed former projectionist. Both describe footsteps in an empty theater and doors and lights operating on their own. No formal paranormal investigation of the building is on record.

Statewide, Virginia City ranks #1, and Bannack State Park, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
