St. Louis holds three of Missouri's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, three St. Louis places, including Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast and Powell Hall, rank among Missouri's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 147 Missouri sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Lehmann House Bed and Breakfast ranks #6. Financier Edward S. Rowse built the 26-room mansion in 1893 as a retirement home, but according to Ladue News, he died of a painful illness in the master bedroom soon after moving in. Three separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1970. Guests and the innkeeper describe footsteps and whispered voices, and children's laughter with no documented child death there.
Powell Hall ranks #8. The St. Louis Symphony Society bought the 1925 movie palace in 1966, reopening it in 1968 as Powell Symphony Hall, renamed for Walter S. Powell. Three separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 2001. Staff and patrons describe "George," a figure in a white tuxedo in the lobby, and a female spirit near the old projection room. The orchestra does not promote the lore.
Also in the top ten: the Lemp Mansion (#2).
Statewide, Epperson House in Kansas City ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
