St. Charles has eight documented haunted places in Missouri's new index

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, St. Charles has eight documented haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index of Missouri's most haunted places, behind only St. Louis, Springfield and Hannibal. The index ranks 147 Missouri sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

At Lindenwood University, founded in 1832 by George Sibley and Mary Easton Sibley, the university archivist says reports of unexplained phenomena have followed the campus for generations. Students describe the Sibley Chapel organ playing with no one at it and a presence in Sibley Hall attributed to Mary Sibley, who died in 1878.

Lewis and Clark's Restaurant on South Main Street occupies an 1890s house. Diners describe a mustached man and a woman in a red Victorian dress on the staircase landing, walking toward a doorway since bricked over. Televisions that cut out during crowded games are more easily blamed on old wiring.

Also documented in St. Charles: the 1866 Mother-in-Law House, now The Main House, where staff describe objects moved overnight, and the St. Charles Borromeo Lost Cemetery site, Missouri's oldest site, where local tradition holds the Lady in White walks the block, said to have died of cholera in the 1850s shortly after giving birth.

Statewide, Epperson House in Kansas City ranks #1, and the Lemp Mansion in St. Louis, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #2.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
