Kansas City's Epperson House ranks #1 among Missouri's most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Epperson House in Kansas City ranks #1 among Missouri's most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 147 Missouri sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Epperson House ranks #1. Insurance executive Uriah Epperson and his wife Mary hired architect Horace LaPierre to build the 54-room mansion between 1919 and 1923. Five separate published accounts describe activity there. Navy air cadets billeted there during the Second World War were the first to report activity, describing footsteps in empty wings and a tower light switching on despite the tower's sealed access; students and staff have since reported a chandelier that fell and narrowly missed a custodian. Two campus police reports followed decades later: officers saw an arm in a blue suit sleeve switch off a light in 1978, and a patrol car was struck from behind by nothing visible in May 1979.
Statewide, the Lemp Mansion in St. Louis, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #2.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:Epperson House, 5200 Cherry St., Kansas City, is visible from the UMKC campus walkways at any time; the interior is closed pending a hotel conversion.
