Lizzie Borden House misses Massachusetts's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, the Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, Massachusetts's most famous haunted site, does not rank among the state's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 139 Massachusetts sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
The Victorian house at 230 2nd St. dates to 1845; banker Andrew Borden bought it and converted it into a single-family home. On August 4, 1892, Andrew and his wife, Abby Borden, were killed inside; Andrew's daughter Lizzie Borden was tried the next year and acquitted, and no one else was ever charged. Lizzie later lived elsewhere in Fall River until her death in 1927, and the house passed through several owners before opening as a museum and inn. Overnight investigators describe a recorded voice that sounds like it is saying 'help me' in the guest bedroom where Abby died, and unexplained heat signatures in the sitting room where Andrew died. They also describe children's laughter and a rocking chair moving in the third-floor attic, with no source identified.
Statewide, Stone's Public House in Ashland ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
