FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Fort Knox ranks #1 among Maine's most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Fort Knox State Historic Site in Prospect ranks #1 among Maine's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 51 Maine sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Fort Knox State Historic Site ranks #1, is the index's most family-friendly pick in the state, and is also Maine's most famous haunted site. Maine began building the granite fort in 1844 to guard the Penobscot River, and caretaker Sergeant Leopold Hegyi died there in 1900. Five separate published accounts describe activity there. Visitors and staff report phantom footsteps, voices and laughter in the casemates and officers' quarters, along with the sensation of being touched.
Outside Waldo County, Owls Head Lighthouse ranks highest, at #2.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:Fort Knox State Historic Site, 740 Fort Knox Rd., Prospect, is open for self-guided tours May through October; admission is $5 to $8 for adults. The Friends of Fort Knox host paranormal-investigation tours in October.
