Boothbay Opera House ranks #3 among Maine's most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Boothbay Opera House in Boothbay Harbor ranks #3 among Maine's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 51 Maine sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Boothbay Opera House ranks #3. The theater was built in 1894 as headquarters for the Knights of Pythias, and staff have nicknamed its resident presence Fingers, after Earl Cliff, an early-1900s house pianist. Six separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1949. Witnesses describe hearing the second-floor player piano play on its own, though it no longer works, and ushers report hearing their names called in empty hallways; some staff also describe feeling touched or pushed by an unseen presence.
Statewide, Fort Knox State Historic Site in Prospect ranks #1 and is also Maine's most famous haunted site.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
