Owls Head Lighthouse ranks #2 among Maine's most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Owls Head Lighthouse in Owls Head ranks #2 among Maine's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 51 Maine sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Owls Head Lighthouse ranks #2, and no Maine site has more separate published accounts. President John Quincy Adams authorized the first tower in 1825, and the present brick tower replaced it in 1852. Ten separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1920. Guests describe a presence known as the Little Lady in the keeper's kitchen, and historian Bill O. Thomson has written about a former keeper's workman's boot prints appearing in fresh snow leading only toward the tower. The American Lighthouse Foundation, which operates the tower, acknowledges the lore as a cultural artifact.

Statewide, Fort Knox State Historic Site in Prospect ranks #1 and is also Maine's most famous haunted site.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:Owls Head Lighthouse, 186 Lighthouse Rd., Owls Head, sits in a state park that is free and open daily; the tower interior opens seasonally through the American Lighthouse Foundation.
