The Rookery at Fort Leavenworth ranks #7 among Kansas's haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, the Rookery at Fort Leavenworth (exterior viewing only) ranks #7 among Kansas's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 68 Kansas sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
The Rookery ranks #7, and is Kansas's oldest documented site. Built in 1832 at Fort Leavenworth, it is the oldest continuously inhabited structure on the post and briefly housed General George Custer in 1867, before his court-martial that year. Four separate published accounts describe activity there, retold in one later publication, the earliest dated to 2000. Generations of officers' families have reported unexplained footsteps and cold spots in rooms with no outside air source, and a 2010 U.S. Army news article documented one family's account of the activity.
Statewide, Fort Riley ranks #1, and Sallie House (visits by guided tour only), the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #2.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:The Rookery, 12-14 Summer Place at Fort Leavenworth, is a private officers' residence on an active military post; exterior viewing only. Please do not trespass.
