Atchison's Sallie House ranks #2 among Kansas's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Atchison's Sallie House (visits by guided tour only) ranks #2 among Kansas's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 68 Kansas sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Sallie House, Kansas's most famous haunted site, ranks #2. Dr. Charles Finney ran a medical practice from the basement of the Atchison house in the mid-1800s. Local legend, never confirmed in any record, holds that a young girl died there on an operating table during an emergency procedure; residents have called the house's presence Sallie in the decades since. In 1993, tenants Tony and Debra Pickman documented unexplained scratches appearing on Tony's body and fires breaking out in the house; investigators attributed the activity at the time to a separate, more aggressive presence, and the footage became the foundation of national media coverage. Three separate published accounts describe activity at Sallie House, retold in 11 later publications, the earliest dated to 1992. The trained dogs investigators bring in reportedly refuse to cross the threshold of the room where the activity concentrated.
Statewide, Fort Riley ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
