FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Fort Madison's Historic Iowa State Penitentiary is Iowa's oldest documented site

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, the Historic Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison is the oldest documented site in HauntBound's 2026 index of Iowa's most haunted places. The index ranks 80 Iowa sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

The Iowa Territorial Legislature established the penitentiary in Fort Madison on January 25, 1839, patterned on the Auburn Penitentiary in New York, a year after Iowa became a territory and seven years before statehood. The fortress-style prison operated continuously for 176 years, overseeing 40 executions and a 1981 riot and standoff before its 2015 closure, making it the longest continually operating prison west of the Mississippi River.

Former prison staff and inmates described a corridor in the solitary confinement wing that overnight guards were reluctant to enter, citing cold spots and the sound of chains clanking and moaning. Visitors to later open events have reported a sense of heaviness and sounds of movement on the empty cell blocks. The nonprofit that now manages the closed prison, working with the City of Fort Madison, is developing museum and ghost-tour programming there.

Statewide, the Mathias Ham House Historic Site in Dubuque ranks #1; Villisca Axe Murder House, Iowa's most famous haunted site, ranks #9. Apparitions are the index's most commonly reported phenomenon, on record at 42 Iowa sites.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.

Visiting:The Historic Iowa State Penitentiary, 3 John Bennett Drive, Fort Madison, is closed to the public; its fortress-style exterior can be viewed from the street during daylight hours.
