Rockford's Tinker Swiss Cottage is Illinois's most family-friendly haunted site

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, Rockford's Tinker Swiss Cottage is the most family-friendly haunted site in HauntBound's 2026 index of Illinois's most haunted places. The index ranks 156 Illinois sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Robert Hall Tinker, born in Honolulu to American missionaries, came home from a European tour in 1862 admiring Swiss architecture and built the 27-room cottage on a limestone bluff over Kent Creek between 1865 and 1870. He hand-carved its walnut spiral staircase from a single piece of wood. In 1870 he married Mary Dorr Manny, who had run the Manny Reaper Works after her first husband's death, and in 1875 he served as Rockford's mayor. The Rockford Park District, which Tinker helped found, opened the house as a museum in 1943.

Investigators on SyFy's Ghost Hunters reported shadow figures, voice recordings and sudden temperature drops there, and later regional groups have described footsteps and objects moving, mostly on the upper floors and around the spiral staircase. The museum treats those reports as part of its history, playing earlier investigators' audio clips on its paranormal tour.

Statewide, Peoria State Hospital in Bartonville ranks #1, and Resurrection Cemetery in Justice, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
