FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Roosevelt Inn ranks #7 among Idaho's most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, The Roosevelt Inn in Coeur d'Alene ranks #7 among Idaho's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 39 Idaho sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

The Roosevelt Inn ranks #7. Architect George Williams designed the three-story brick building as a Coeur d'Alene elementary school in 1905; it later reopened as a bed-and-breakfast in 1994 before closing in May 2025. Four separate published accounts describe activity there. Longtime innkeepers described hearing a small voice say "grandma, grandma," along with bedspread corners turned up and light bulbs found unscrewed in lamps. No death of a child at the building has been documented, and the family's nickname for the presence, Dennis, was borrowed from a television show rather than any specific person.

Statewide, the Idanha Hotel in Boise ranks #1; the Old Idaho State Penitentiary, the state's most famous haunted site, ranks #6.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
