Four St. Augustine landmarks rank among Florida's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, four St. Augustine landmarks rank among Florida's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 282 Florida sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
St. Augustine Lighthouse ranks #3. The 165-foot tower, completed in 1874, replaced a Spanish watchtower; a construction accident on the site's supply tramway drowned two sisters and a friend in 1873. Four separate published accounts describe activity there. Staff report footsteps on the tower stairs and ribbons of blue light on infrared photography.
Casa de Solana ranks #2. Don Manuel Lorenzo Solana built this tabby house on Aviles Street in 1763, one of only eight Spanish soldiers allowed to remain after Britain took Florida. Three separate published accounts describe activity there. Guests describe a woman in white identified as Solana's first wife, Mary Mitchell.
Also in the top ten: the González-Álvarez House (#7) and Flagler College (#8).
Statewide, Keating Hall at Ringling College in Sarasota (exterior viewing only) ranks #1, and Fort East Martello Museum in Key West, home of Robert the Doll and the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
