FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Silver Cliff Cemetery ranks #1 in Colorado's most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Silver Cliff Cemetery in Silver Cliff ranks #1 among Colorado's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 132 Colorado sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Silver Cliff Cemetery ranks #1. Local legend dates the small blue-white lights that drift among the prairie cemetery's headstones to the town's 1870s mining boom; the earliest known written report is a 1956 Wet Mountain Tribune story, and the best known is National Geographic writer Edward Linehan's in August 1969. Five separate published accounts describe activity there, retold in four later publications. Visitors describe the lights as silver-dollar-sized and pale blue-white, moving low among the graves with no apparent source. Researchers have proposed phosphorescence on damp grave markers and retinal phosphenes as explanations; local lore holds that the lights still appeared during a town-wide blackout staged to test them.
The Stanley Hotel, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
Visiting:Silver Cliff Cemetery, 1435 Mill Street, Silver Cliff, is owned and operated by the town.
