San Francisco holds two of California's ten most haunted places

A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend

September 30, 2026

With Halloween approaching, two San Francisco places, including Alcatraz Island, rank among California's ten most haunted places in HauntBound's 2026 index. The index ranks 554 California sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.

Alcatraz Island ranks #8. The federal penitentiary operated from 1934 until 1963, holding inmates including Al Capone and Robert Stroud, the Birdman of Alcatraz. One firsthand published account, retold in four later publications, describes activity there, the earliest dated to 1992. Guards described crashing sounds in empty sections of the cellhouse and self-securing cell doors, and Cell 14D is reported as the coldest spot in the building.

San Francisco Art Institute (exterior viewing only) ranks #6. Night watchman Bill Morehouse reported footsteps climbing the bell tower and a door opening and closing on its own in 1947. Four separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 1940. Later students and staff describe tools and lights activating on their own, and a 1968 seance attributed the disturbances to the collective energy of generations of frustrated art students rather than any single spirit.

Statewide, the Hotel Del Coronado in Coronado ranks #1, and the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, the state's most famous haunted site, misses the top ten.

"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
