FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Cochise County holds two of Arizona's ten most haunted places
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, two Cochise County places rank among Arizona's ten most haunted in HauntBound's 2026 index, including Tombstone's Bird Cage Theatre at #3. The index ranks 116 Arizona sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Bird Cage Theatre ranks #3, and it is also Arizona's most famous haunted site. Lottie and William "Billy" Hutchinson opened the theater on December 26, 1881, intending a family variety hall; the town's miners, gamblers and gunmen had other ideas. Five separate published accounts describe activity there, the earliest dated to 2019. Visitors and staff describe the smell of cigar smoke and an unidentified floral perfume, disembodied piano music from the theater's silent stage piano, and a figure in a black hat reported in the basement poker room. Ghost Hunters investigated the theater for the Sci-Fi Channel in 2006, reporting anomalous audio and movement overnight.
Copper Queen Hotel ranks #8. Built between 1898 and 1902 by the Phelps Dodge Corporation to house investors visiting its Bisbee copper mine, it is Arizona's oldest continuously operating hotel and has hosted guests including Theodore Roosevelt and John Wayne.
Statewide, London Bridge in Lake Havasu City ranks #1.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
