FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Anchorage's Oscar Anderson House Museum is Alaska's most family-friendly haunted site
A new index ranks places by published accounts, not legend
September 30, 2026
With Halloween approaching, Anchorage's Oscar Anderson House Museum (closed for the 2026 season) is the most family-friendly haunted site in HauntBound's 2026 index of Alaska's most haunted places. The index ranks 26 Alaska sites by separate published accounts and how far back they go, not by fame or search popularity.
Oscar Anderson, a Swedish immigrant butcher who said he was the 18th person to arrive at the Ship Creek tent camp that became Anchorage, built the wood-frame house in 1915, the city's first, and lived there until his death in 1974.
Visitors describe doors slamming with no explanation and footsteps echoing on the upper floor when no one is upstairs, reports attributed to Anderson himself. The Alaska Association for Historic Preservation, which operates the house as a museum, treats the lore as part of the building's story rather than a selling point.
Also in the top ten, the Historic Anchorage Hotel ranks #2.
Statewide, the Alaskan Hotel & Bar in Juneau ranks #1 and is Alaska's most famous haunted site.
"We rank by evidence, not legend: independent published accounts, documented history, and how far back the reports go. We don't claim ghosts are real, or that they aren't. We document where the reports concentrate, and we show our work," said Ben Fineman, editor of HauntBound. The ranking shows each site's documented record.
