Footsteps on stageSeats creaking and movingApplause heard at nightApparitions offstage and in basementStage trap door opening on its own

Workers and volunteers at the Retlaw and its successor businesses have reported footsteps on the stage when no one is present, seats creaking and moving on their own, applause heard at night when the building is empty, and figures glimpsed offstage and in the basement storage area. The hinged trap door on the stage floor has been reported left closed at night and found open the next morning.

Local Fond du Lac tradition associates the activity with Walter Schroeder himself and with former performers who appeared at the theater during its vaudeville and early film years. The Wisconsin Frights writeup compiles staff reports across the building's later occupants.

The Eagles Club opened on September 13, 1927, as the Milwaukee headquarters of the Fraternal Order of Eagles. Designed as a civic social club, the 180,000-square-foot, seven-level granite block structure originally contained a grand ballroom, barbershop, bowling alley, and swimming pool. Three days before opening, 15-year-old Francis Wren drowned in the basement pool — the event that anchors the building's paranormal reputation. In 1991, the building became The Rave, a concert venue.
