Est. 1802 · Late-Georgian frontier architecture · Home of General James Winchester · National Register of Historic Places · Tennessee State Historic Site · Memphis co-founder context
Cragfont is a stone mansion in the hills of Castalian Springs, Tennessee, built around 1802 by General James Winchester. Construction was begun in 1798 and completed in 1802 by artisans brought from Winchester's home state of Maryland. During the early nineteenth century Cragfont was the finest mansion on the Tennessee frontier and typified the grandeur and style of late-Georgian architecture.
Winchester was a Revolutionary War officer, a War of 1812 general, and one of the founders of Memphis, Tennessee. He died at Cragfont in 1826 and is buried in the family plot behind the house. The Winchester family raised twelve children at Cragfont. Twentieth- and twenty-first-century interpretation of the property has increasingly attended to the enslaved people who lived and worked at the site; Humanities Tennessee has published material on rethinking Cragfont's historic-house interpretation.
Cragfont is on the National Register of Historic Places and operates today as a Tennessee state historic site open seasonally to the public.

FootstepsShadow figuresTouches and physical sensationsSudden headachesStrong energy in master bedroom and nursery
Cragfont is consistently described in Middle Tennessee paranormal writing as one of the most actively investigated historic homes in the state. The Tennessee Wraith Chasers were the first paranormal team to investigate the house, in a 2018 episode of Travel Channel's Haunted Live. Their experiences included unexplained footsteps, shadow figures, and physical sensations such as touches and sudden headaches.
Visitors and staff have particularly cited strong energy in the master bedroom and the nursery. The Shadowlands entry notes that the on-site interpreters have offered a Sunday ghost tour for years; visitors should ask current staff about scheduling. The accounts in WKRN's Haunted Tennessee series and on the Battlefield Trust and Cragfont state-historic-site pages are presented soberly alongside the broader interpretation of the Winchester family and the enslaved community at Cragfont.
