Est. 1959 · Civil War Military Occupation · Rural Tennessee Healthcare History
The land beneath the Old South Pittsburg Hospital has been occupied in sequence: Native Americans farming and fishing along the Tennessee River in 1778, Union soldiers establishing a presence during the summer of 1863, and then the hospital itself, founded in 1959 by four local physicians under the name South Pittsburg Municipal Hospital.
The facility grew substantially from its original footprint, expanding over several decades until it encompassed 68,000 square feet. For nearly four decades it was the primary medical facility for South Pittsburg and the surrounding Marion County communities, handling the full range of community healthcare — births, surgeries, emergency care, and chronic illness management.
The hospital closed in 1998. The building sat vacant until paranormal investigator Ronne D purchased the property and converted it into the Old South Pittsburg Hospital Paranormal Research Center, transforming the former clinical space into an active investigation venue while preserving the original architectural character of the building.
One documented piece of personal history connected to the hospital involves Dr. J.B. Havron, one of the hospital's founders. According to accounts circulated among investigators, his wife Carolyn was murdered while he was on duty at the hospital — a tragedy that investigators cite as one source of reported residual energy in the building. This account appears in multiple paranormal investigation write-ups but has not been independently verified through newspaper archives reviewed for this entry.
The facility has been featured on multiple paranormal television productions, including Destination Fear, Kindred Spirits, Paranormal Challenge, and Ghost Asylum, establishing its reputation within the national paranormal investigation community.

The shadow figure on the third floor is seven feet tall by consistent investigator accounts. It appears near the former psychiatric and surgical areas and has been independently reported by multiple investigation groups who had no prior communication about what to expect. The figure does not respond to direct address the way investigators describe intelligent spirits responding — it moves, appears in doorways, and withdraws without interaction.
On the second floor, the entity identified as 'Buddy' — believed by investigators to be the spirit of a child who spent time in the hospital — has a different character. Investigators describe Buddy as interactive, responsive to children's toys and trigger objects, and the source of disembodied giggling captured in audio recordings. The contrast between the second and third floors is frequently cited by investigators who have spent time in both.
The basement is an additional focus of investigation activity. Movement, unexplained sounds, and what investigators describe as physical sensations — cold spots and the sense of being followed — are reported by groups working in the lower level.
The building has also generated significant EVP documentation. The center's owner has accumulated recordings over years of operation, and visiting investigation teams routinely capture audio anomalies that are not attributed to the building's structure or environmental factors.
Reported phenomena include full-body apparitions, shadow figures, disembodied voices and screaming, objects being moved, and the sound of footsteps on floors where no investigators are present.
