Est. 1927 · 1927 New York Central Railroad union terminal · Downtown Erie rail gateway · Adaptive reuse as a brewpub in 2006
Erie's Union Station was constructed by the New York Central Railroad and dedicated on December 3, 1927, at a reported cost of more than three million dollars. The station consolidated several rail lines into a single downtown terminal and served as one of the city's main passenger gateways through the mid-20th century.
As intercity rail travel fell off in the postwar decades, the building's role shrank. Portions of the structure were repurposed over the years, and by the early 2000s the station had become a candidate for downtown redevelopment.
The Brewerie at Union Station opened in 2006 inside the building, billed as Erie's lone brewpub and restaurant. Its founders framed the project around brewing local beer, serving food, and supporting the revitalization of downtown Erie. The restored interior retains period features including the marble staircase that figures in the venue's ghost lore.
The Brewerie has leaned into that history, offering seasonal Haunted History Tours during April and October that pair the station's past with accounts of reported phenomena. The building remains a working part of Erie's downtown rather than a museum piece, with the brewpub operating in space that once moved railroad passengers through the city.

Tripping sensation near the stairwellDisembodied gigglingCold spots
The Brewerie's resident lore centers on a child the staff call Clara. In the version told on the venue's seasonal tours and reported by Erie News Now, a young girl was at the station with her parents buying tickets; as the family climbed the stairs toward the train platform, she fell backward down the marble staircase and was killed. No primary record naming the child or dating the fall has surfaced in published sources, so the account stands as building lore rather than documented history.
Owner Chris Sirianni told Erie News Now that people standing near the stairwell often report a tripping sensation at the shin, as if a small child stuck out a foot. Manager Caitlynn McCarthy described hearing giggling and turning to find no one there while she was alone upstairs. Paranormal groups have investigated the building over the years.
The Brewerie folds these accounts into its Haunted History Tours each April and October, serving a beer the staff named 'Apparition Amber' as part of the program. The reported phenomena are presented as part of the venue's entertainment offering rather than as verified events.
