Est. 1820 · 19th-century iron plantation · National Register of Historic Places · Hatfield-Hibernia Historic District · Chester County preserved historic park
Hibernia traces its origins to the mid-18th century when Quaker George Harrison acquired the land along the West Branch of the Brandywine. Iron forging began at Hibernia to convert pig iron into bar iron, and the property changed hands several times before Charles Brooke purchased it in 1821 and grew into its most prosperous ironmaster. The estate's mansion, expanded by Brooke and a successor named Colonel Swayne, was redesigned in the early 20th century by a Philadelphia lawyer who used it as a country estate, giving the building its English country-house aesthetic. The property is part of the Hatfield-Hibernia National Register Historic District and is owned by the Chester County Department of Parks and Preservation. Today the 900+ acre Hibernia County Park surrounds the mansion, which has been restored as a period museum offering tours every Sunday from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Walking tours explore the ironmasters' legacy across the Forest Hill and Forge trails as well as Lion's Head Drive.

Reports of children's voices in the mansion cellar (per local folklore)
Local folklore associated with Hibernia Mansion tells of two children whose voices and screams can reportedly be heard in the cellar of the house. Chester County's official site materials about the mansion focus on iron-industry history, English country-house design, and ironmaster family lineages; the cellar legend is not documented in the property's historical record and circulates primarily through regional ghost-folklore sources. Visitors interested in the legend should engage with it as community-shared folklore while respecting the park's daytime visitor programs.
