The town developed as an agricultural and light-industrial center through the 19th century, and its Main Street retains a high concentration of historic buildings from that era. Several of the structures date to the 1850s and 1860s and were built as farmhouses or combined commercial-residential buildings before later conversion to offices and retail use.
ClinCon Research Inc., founded in 1987, has been listed at a Main Street address in Chester for several decades and operates as a contract research organization providing support to pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and medical device companies. The specific farmhouse it occupies — a mid-1800s structure described as refurbished — has no separate historical record in publicly available sources but fits the architectural character common to that part of Morris County.

The lore attached to this farmhouse derives from a single Shadowlands user submission and has not been independently corroborated. According to that account, a farmer living in the house in the 19th century regularly saw a young girl in a white dress watching him through a window, sometimes crying. His dog consistently refused to enter the room where the girl appeared most frequently. After the farmer locked the dog in that room as a test, the animal clawed and chewed its way nearly through the door to escape. On one occasion the farmer confronted the figure in a hallway; when she turned toward him, she had no visible facial features.
More recent reports attributed to the same submission describe unexplained furniture movement in the building. A passing note in the same submission mentions that many other buildings on Chester's Main Street, including the Publick House Inn, are also considered haunted — a claim that is independently documented for the Publick House, which has been the subject of ghost-tour programming and Weird NJ coverage.
