Basketball bouncing sounds in empty gymFemale voice in locker roomUnexplained sounds confirmed by multiple witnesses

The legend centers on a female student referred to locally as Tina, said to have been killed in a car accident around 1970 or 1971 while she was being recruited by college basketball scouts. Since that period, the old gymnasium has generated accounts of auditory phenomena: a basketball bouncing on the hardwood when no one is inside, and a girl's voice heard in or near the locker room without any explainable source.

A 2020 Charlotte Magazine feature documented the accounts from multiple named school staff members. A coach, members of the lunch crew, and janitors all described hearing the sounds independently over the decades. Most notably, the school's own principal is described as having had such an encounter — lending a level of institutional acknowledgment unusual for this type of local legend.

No ghost tour operates from the gymnasium, and the building remains an active facility. The story persists primarily through local oral tradition and regional press coverage. The student referred to as 'Tina' has not been identified by full name in public sources; her identity remains unverified.
