The Dunhill's paranormal narrative has multiple anchors. The most documented is the 1988 discovery of human remains in the elevator shaft, identified in May 2023 by CMPD as Oliver 'Doc' Mundy. For roughly 35 years between the discovery and the identification, the case appeared in regional ghost-tour and unsolved-mystery coverage as one of Uptown Charlotte's persistent open files; Queen City Nerve and WCNC both note the case's role in Charlotte ghost-tour material before its 2023 resolution.

Room 906 carries an active separate lore. Visitors and staff have reported faucets turning on and off without intervention, electronics shutting down, and a recurring tapping or fingernail sound on the nightstand. Tour material connects these reports to a guest said to have jumped from the room's window in the building's earlier operating decades; the underlying death is referenced in regional ghost-tour material rather than confirmed in primary news sources we surfaced.

A spirit nicknamed 'Dusty' is the hotel's named ghost in tour lore. Tour operators (Queen City Ghosts, Haunted Rooms America, Charlotte Ghost Tours) describe Dusty as a friendly presence felt in the upper-floor corridors. The hotel itself acknowledges its long-running haunted reputation in marketing aimed at Historic Hotels of America audiences without making confirmation claims.
