Mac's Cafe was a bar in Berger, Missouri, a small town in Franklin County west of St. Louis along the Missouri River corridor. At some point in the establishment's history, it transitioned to a sports bar and grill operating under the name Darlene's One Stop.
Regional paranormal sources suggest the establishment may have closed, though this could not be definitively confirmed in available sources. The building includes an apartment above the bar that figures in the property's paranormal tradition.
No newspaper archive, local historical society record, or other primary source documentation for the specific history of this establishment was found.
Sources
The haunted tradition at Mac's Cafe centers on Jack Schaefer — named in regional sources alternately as Schafer and Schaeger, a spelling discrepancy that suggests the name passed through oral tradition before being recorded. Schaefer is described as having been an explosive character and an abusive boyfriend and stepfather who resided in the apartment above the bar.
After his death, witnesses report his presence in the building at night — entering his old bedroom, roaming the structure, and watching people in a manner described as threatening. The characterization is consistent across available sources: he is not described as a benign or mischievous presence but as the continuation of a personality that was difficult and dangerous in life.
This type of haunt — associated with a named, characterologically specific individual whose reported behavior mirrors their living conduct — appears occasionally in regional paranormal traditions. It differs from residual or impersonal accounts and implies either a genuine local tradition or a particularly coherent piece of folklore construction.
Regional sources note a name discrepancy (Schaefer vs. Schaeger) and uncertainty about the bar's current operating status.

Hannibal, MO
The Victorian house at 207 N 5th Street (5th and Center) was the residence of W.A. Munger, a former Hannibal mayor and the host of the December 29, 1888 card party that wealthy lumber and ice merchant Amos J. Stillwell attended on the last evening of his life. Stillwell was axe-murdered in his bed at 112 S 5th Street later that night — Hannibal's most famous unsolved homicide. The former Munger residence later housed LaBinnah Bistro, which closed by February 2026.
Grants, NM
The Montecarlo Cafe was established by Escolástico Mazon in the early 1950s on W Santa Fe Avenue — the Route 66 corridor through Grants, New Mexico. Business boomed with uranium discovery in the region, and the cafe became a fixture for miners and local residents. An early 1990s fire gutted the upstairs apartments, which were subsequently rebuilt as banquet space. The restaurant has been closed for several years.
Marceline, MO
Mom's Restaurant at 116 North Kansas Avenue in Marceline, Missouri has operated for many years in Linn County. Marceline is best known as the childhood home of Walt Disney, who spent his early years in the town before his family moved to Kansas City. Mom's Restaurant has been a local institution associated with persistent reports of paranormal activity over an extended period.
